Hiago reached out to me with a really interesting project. He had the City Free For All map and wanted to give it a more updated look, since the original version was from April 2023. But he also wanted to do that while minimizing memory usage and download time as much as possible. Because of that, I figured the best approach would be to use the smallest number of different props and avoid custom meshes altogether. That directly impacted how I adapted the look of the POIs and the city, using the same official Epic mesh and only changing the texture data.
On top of that, Hiago also wanted to add new biomes to bring some visual variety to the map.
With that in mind, I set a few priorities. It was important to keep the positioning of the POIs relatively similar, since we didn’t want long-time players who logged in daily to feel like everything had changed. We wanted it to be a visual upgrade, but still offer nearly the same gameplay experience, always aiming for steady, positive growth. So I restructured the landscape to make sure the points were connected and had a visual relationship, encouraging players to explore the new layout.
Another important challenge was making the map feel interactive and alive, with accessible building interiors and little gameplay situations, while sticking to the limited use of props. That part was definitely tricky.
The project turned out really well and we hit some great results.
This post focuses only on the POIs and the landscape, the city will be in another one.!
